Open Gym FAQs

What is Open Gym?
It's an allotted time at DPI Adaptive Fitness Gym that is sponsored by Adaptive Fitness Legion.
How much does Open Gym cost?
Open Gym is FREE for anyone at any ability.
What are Open Gym times?
11am–12:30pm. Please note: trainers cannot stay longer because they may have scheduled 1:1 sessions right after open gym or personal plans—please schedule your rides accordingly. If you arrive early, please wait in the waiting area and do not get on equipment.
Why do I have to sign up?
We have a limited number of spaces for Open Gym to assure safety for all participants.
What happens if I sign up and don't show up?
If you reach out to AFL within 36 hours to let us know you can't attend, we'll release your spot. If you do not notify within 36 hours or you no-call no-show, you won't be able to sign up for Open Gym for a month. We have a waitlist and many folks need more than 24 hours to arrange transportation. We understand emergencies happen and will review on a case-by-case basis.
What do trainers focus on during gym time?
They keep everyone safe, suggest workouts, and help participants get on machines.
Can I get on standers, use my braces, etc.?
If you get on a stander you must be able to do it on your own. If you want to wear braces or practice walking, it will be on your own—a trainer cannot focus only on you. We recommend practicing these during a 1:1 session with an adaptive trainer.
Why can't a trainer just work with me?
Open Gym is for the entire community and we have to share time with everyone.
Can we eat during Open Gym?
No food is allowed in the workout area at any time. You can have a snack in the waiting area or outside in the courtyard (please keep food allergies in mind).

Inclement weather policy

The safety of our participants is our top priority. During inclement weather, AFL events follow WMATA's MetroAccess schedule (wmata.com/rider-guide/weather). If MetroAccess is shut down, AFL events are shut down as well. AFL also reserves the right to cancel for trainer and participant safety even if MetroAccess has not canceled. Participants will be notified by email if an event is canceled. Please check your email—AFL has no other means to contact participants and is not responsible if you arrive when an event has been canceled.
