Open Gym FAQS
WHAT IS OPEN GYM?
It’s an allotted time at DPI Adaptive Fitness Gym, that is sponsored by Adaptive Fitness Legion.
HOW MUCH DOES OPEN GYM COST?
Open Gym is FREE for anyone at any ability.
WHAT ARE OPEN GYM TIMES?
11am-12:30pm
- If you are early please wait in the waiting area, do not get on equipment
- Please note trainers cannot stay on longer because they might have scheduled 1:1 right after open gym or they have personal plans (schedule your rides accordingly)
WHY DO I HAVE TO SIGN UP?
We have a limited number of spaces for Open Gym to assure safety for all participants
WHAT HAPPENS IF I SIGN UP AND DON’T SHOW UP?
If you reach out to AFL and let them know you won’t be able to attend within 36hrs we will release your spot and all is good. If you do not notify within 36 hours or you NO CALL NO SHOW you won’t be able to sign up for Open Gym for a month. Why? There is a wait list to attend open gym and it’s not fair to take a spot from someone else and many folks need >24hrs to arrange transportation. We understand that emergencies happen, and we will review on a one-on-one basis.
WHAT ARE THE TRAINERS MAIN FOCUS DURING GYM TIME?
- They help participants get on machines
- They suggest workouts
- They keep everyone safe
CAN I GET ON STANDERS, USE MY BRACES, ETC?
If you get on a Stander you must be able to do it on your own. If you want to wear your braces or practice your walking it will be on your own. A trainer will not be able to focus just on you. If this is something you do want to practice we recommend you do this during a 1:1 session with an adaptive trainer.
WHY CAN’T A TRAINER JUST WORK WITH ME?
Open Gym is for the entire the community and we have to share time with everyone
CAN WE EAT DURING OPEN GYM?
NO FOOD is allowed in work out area at any time. You can have a snack in the waiting area or outside in the courtyard. (please keep food allergy in mind)
ARE THERE GYM RULES?
Gym Rules are on the wall by the front desk. We encourage you to read all gym rules as they are important for everyone’s safety
Inclement weather policy
The safety of our participants is top of mind for the AFL. During periods of inclement weather, AFL events will follow WMATA’s MetroAccess schedule (https://www.wmata.com/rider-guide/weather). In other words, if MetroAccess is shut down, AFL events are shut down as well. This is the general rule, but for trainer and participant safety AFL reserves the right to cancel due to inclement weather even if MetroAccess has not canceled service.
Participants will be notified BY EMAIL if the event is canceled. It is important that participants check their email as the AFL has no other means to contact participants and will not be held responsible for participants showing up when an event has been canceled.
